As the word implies, toxins are harmful substances. They can be produced by the body or come from an outside source. An example of a toxin most Floridians will know about is red tide. This is an acute exposure to a toxin, but our daily lives expose us to toxins through the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the water we swim in.

Luckily our bodies are made to get rid of these harmful substances. The liver, kidney, lungs, skin and colon all play a role in eliminating toxins from our body. If one of these organs is not working to full capacity, or you’re exposed to more toxins than your body can handle, you may experience toxin burden. Memory loss, body aches, allergies, rashes, weight gain and fatigue are a few symptoms of toxin burden.

What Can We Do to Help Our Bodies Get Rid of Toxins?

Make sure you drink plenty of water. You should drink half of your body weight in ounces each day and if you drink coffee, tea or cokes, add on that much more water. Avoid tobacco, alcohol and processed high-fat foods. Instead, incorporate more fruits and vegetables int your diet but stick to the clean 15 and the dirty dozen rule (go to ewg.org/food-news/clean-fifteen.php for more information).

Incorporate moderate exercise and stress-reducing techniques and remember to breathe. Breathing in for 10 seconds, holding for 10 seconds and breathing out for 10 seconds, 10 times a day can release up to 3 pounds of toxins from the lungs in one week.
