sleep and stress
August 1, 2022

Did you know that stress not only can keep you awake at night, but also can cause you to wake up before the rooster crows?

In a 2013 American study, 43% of adults reported that stress affected their sleep. In today’s world, our flight or fight response is always flipped on. Stress-inducing situations such as relationship difficulties, work problems, rising gas prices, and hearing about the newest COVID strain all can cause our autonomic nervous system to continuously release hormones keeping our body in a heightened state of arousal.

This can cause rapid and anxious thoughts that keep you awake at night, but if it continues for an extended period of time, it also can cause you to wake up too early in the morning. The stress hormone, cortisol, may be responsible for your sleepless nights. Cortisol has a circadian rhythm that is formed in close association with the sleep wake cycle.

But don’t stress, there is a solution if your cortisol is off track! Come into Magnolia Pharmacy to have your cortisol tested using a simple saliva test or ask our staff about recommendations to get your beauty sleep back on track.
